Agnus castus, the Chaste Tree, is actually a shrub with violet flowers. Found in the Mediterranean region, its uses have been recorded since the time of Hippocrates. The tiny reddish brown fruits, which appear in the summer, are used to create this tincture.

How it works

Agnus castus acts on the pituitary gland to increase the secretion of luteinising hormone, which leads to an increase in the production of progesterone during the second half of the menstrual cycle. It has also been reported to inhibit prolactin. Both these actions are thought to be important in PMS, particularly as many who suffer with the problem have a greater sensitivity to prolactin. Agnus castus has also been found to be beneficial in the treatment of acne in both men and women.

Ingredients

Tincture of Agnus castus (Chaste Tree) dried fruit, extracted in alcohol (69% v/v).

Directions for use

• Adults: 15-20 drops in a little water twice daily.
• Children: This product is not recommended for children under 14 years of age
• Do not take if using oral contraceptives or HRT.
• Please seek medical advice if pregnant.
• Keep out of reach and sight of children.
• Store in a cool dry place.
