While beauty products and regular exercise can assist in this fight – the key to looking, feeling and being forever young may actually lie in the soles of our FEET!!

A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine reveals sitting down less and standing up more can actually protect our DNA from ageing by lengthening telomeres, which would increase our lifespan. Science now suggests telomere size is key.

Telomeres

Telomeres sit on the end of chromosomes in cells (like plastic tips on the ends of shoelaces) and stop chromosomes from fraying and thereby altering genetic code. Without telomeres, our genetic information would degrade leading to cellular malfunction, which increases our susceptibility to disease, and even death. Swedish studies reveal our telomere length is influenced by cell division as we age. DNA damage over the years (diet, lifestyle, infections) can wear telomeres down by aging and eventually breaking down. However, the production of Telomerase the enzyme that lengthens telomeres and prevents them from eroding may help prevent cells from dying, which may help preserve telomere length.

Exercise not enough

Research also reveals that people who spend long periods sitting have shorter lives, regardless if they exercise on a regular basis or not. Therefore, reduce sitting time (and other sedentary-related behaviour) by taking a “standing break” for one or two minutes every 30 minutes.

Source: Fisher R, Helenius ML, Kallings L et al. British Journal of Sports Medicine. 2014.

Vitamin C – skin elixir

In the world of skin care, there is a limited amount of ingredients that scientifically improve collagen synthesis in the skin, and vitamin C is one of them. In fact, applying vitamin C to the skin can be 20 times more effective than taking it orally. Topical vitamin C is sold in a wide range of products from serum to lotions. Look for products that contain between 3% and 10% of vitamin C and include the active ingredient ascorbic acid or L-ascorbic acid. For a super powerful anti-aging punch, combine vitamins C and E together such as in Caudalie Polyphenol C15 Anti-Wrinkle range; it contains a relatively new form of vitamin C.

The length of time from when you start using Vitamin C until you see results varies some people see changes as soon as 2-4 weeks, while in others it may take 6-8 weeks to see a difference. After around 6 months, you’ll reach the maximum benefits.
