Can Naturtint be used if the customer has suffered severe allergic reactions to other hair color in the past?

Allergic reactions vary and a skin sensitivity test must be carried out at least 48 hours before application. Naturtint Permanent Hair colorant has been dermatologically tested but in rare cases, reactions can occur. If the customer has previously experienced redness and itching as a result of previous hair colorants then Naturtint Permanent Hair Colorant may be gentle enough to use and if a skin test has been completed with no signs of reaction, the product may be applied. However, if the customer experiences swelling, blistering and/or burning then it is likely that they are allergic to PPD's and a skin test should demonstrate this - if so then the product must not be applied. In these cases, we recommend the use of Naturtint Reflex Non-Permanent Color Rinses, provided a skin test is carried out before use. A skin test is an important precaution before the use of any hair dye but users should be aware that even if a sensitivity test has been carried out, an allergic reaction may still be experienced when the hair is coloured. The allergy alert test is not a guarantee of avoiding future allergic reactions. Medical advice should be sought in the case of any doubts.

What are PPD's?

They are p-phenylenediamines found in ALL permanent and some semi permanent hair colorants with the exclusion of certain hennas. They add colour to the hair but are severe skin irritants and in rare cases can provoke severe or extreme reactions. A PPD reaction would typically result in skin swelling, burning and blistering in the region where they are applied. Naturtint Permanent Hair Colorant contains minimum levels of PPD whilst Naturtint Reflex Non-Permanent Color Rinse is free of PPDs. People allergic to PPD or those simply looking to avoid it should also be mindful that PPD has a number of alternatives that carry the same warnings and risk of allergy, such as toluene-2, 5-diamino sulphate and 2-dihydroxyethylamino or derivatives of PPD such as PPD salts and sulphates like N-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine.

Do hair dyes cause cancer?

There is much controversy surrounding this question but research does not prove this to be the case. PPD's are the main source of concern and as stated above, Naturtint contains minimum levels of PPD's. Another feared chemical is resorcinol also found in most permanent hair dyes but Naturtint does not contain resorcinol (or ammonia).

How can you reduce toxicity and feared cancer risks?

By using a less aggressive hair colorant such as Naturtint, this avoids ammonia and resorcinol completely. Naturtint is also free of naphtol and hydroquinone which are strong chemicals often used in such products. Naturtint Reflex Non-Permanent Color Rinse is even more gentle as it also contains no peroxide and no PPD. We suggest helpful advice:
  • 48 hours before you colour your hair, remember to perform a skin sensitivity test, as a reaction on the arm is less harmful then a reaction across the whole of your head and face.
  • Drink lots of water - ideally 8 hours prior to coloring hair and continue high water intake for at least the next 12 hours
  • Try a lighter color as the lighter shades contain progressively lower levels of PPD
  • Touch up areas of rapid regrowth with small amounts of Naturtint Permanent Hair Colorant mixture and only color full head when necessary
  • Try highlights or lowlights using Naturting Permanent Hair Colorant. You may want the assistance of a hairdresser.
  • Don't wash your hair prior to coloring as the scalp's natural oils can provide a barrier to chemicals but make sure your hair is free from styling products that could hinder the uptake of the colour.

Can Naturtint be used by cancer sufferers?

We have had excellent feedback from customers undergoing a course of chemotherapy treatment using Naturtint Reflex successfully. Crucially, it is free of peroxide as well as ammonia, resorcinol and PPD. We do strongly recommend any such customers seek medical approval before use. Some months after chemotherapy treatment is completed, many customers continue using Naturtint Reflex Non-Permanent Color Rinse and/or move on to Naturtint Permanent Hair Colorant without problems. We strongly recommend that the customer again seeks medical approval as to suitability. Full ingredient information is available from Nature's Dream on request.

Can you use Naturtint whilst pregnant?

Many ladies continue to dye their hair during pregnancy and it is a very personal decision to make. Naturtint provides choice. Naturtint Permanent Hair Colorant is free of two key chemicals - ammonia and resorcinol but Naturtint Reflex Non-Permanent Color Rinse contains no ammonia, resorcinol, peroxide or PPD.

Can Naturtint be used on other parts of the body?

Naturtint is not designed for facial or body hair and should not be used on eyebrows or eyelashes.

Can Naturtint be used on top of previously colored hair?

Most customers have used another colorant previous to trying Naturtint and we suggest wearing that color for 4-6 weeks before applying Naturtint.

We always suggest a strand test before use to ensure the chosen colour brings the desired result. Our helpline can then help if any uncertainties arise.

Can Naturtint be mixed?

Yes, many customers mix colours
